School dropout in quilombola communities in the south of Rio Grande do Sul

This assignment is an excerpt from a broader research conducted in twenty-five quilombola communities from four southern cities of Rio Grande do Sul, this research used an objective questionnaire and semi-structured interviews – in which we seek to know some of the scholar reality of the southern quilombolas – as data collection technique. This research is part of Programa de Extensão Formação Docente e Políticas Educacionais para Quilombos: Continuidades e Perspectivas, funded by PROEXT/MEC and performed by Universidade Federal de Pelotas (UFPel) in the year 2012. We have a universe of thirteen communities, which means eight hundred and sixty people, of all four cities, interviewed so far and we can already have some results about reasons for school dropout: of this total number of people, we noted that the most reported reason is the working, followed by lack of transportation and family-related issues, then the distance from the school and health-related issues, and finally, the lack of high schools in the countryside. It should be emphasized that all o1f the quoted reasons are intertwined and, partly, it’s observed that nowadays many of those structural problems recur with youth and children aggregating, plus, the racism issue Our goal in this research was, precisely, raise data so that, once systematized, it can serve as a document of claims for the quilombola organization that is permanently dialoguing with the appropriate authorities for the solving of these problems, which are covered in the Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais da Educação Escolar Quilombola.
