OH UNCLE, THIS JESUS IS NOT WHITE!
RETHINKING THE IMAGERY OF CHRIST THROUGH VISUAL CULTURE, A CONTRIBUTION TO BLACK AND AFRICAN THEOLOGY
Keywords:
Jesus, Whitening, Black Theology, African Theology, IconographyAbstract
This text is part of the discussions concerning Black Theology and African Theology. In it we seek to deconstruct and understand the process of whitening around the figure of Christ. The best way to deconstruct this imaginary is starting from history. However, even starting from history, the resolution of this problem is not that easy, because this figure also transcends history itself, it is in the face of this fact that we seek in this text to link theology to history, adding, obviously, another element, which we are calling here visual culture, or simply, iconography. This third element is important insofar as it was through it that the imagery we have about the White Jesus was uniformly disseminated.
