Abstract

The article provides a brief overview on the implementation of Law 10,639 of 2003 which provides for the inclusion of content about African-Brazilian and African history and culture in the school. Resulted from an extension project, conducted between 2010 and 2011, the paper presents the result of applying forms and interviews on the top twenty schools, public and private, listed by MEC, according to ENEM 2009. It compares the data with some of the earlier studies both on the evaluation of the implementation of the law and on integration actions and training by the state. The analysis revealed that the law is not yet fully effective, the insertion of the contents provided in the Law is not quite present in the schools; it revealed the reasons listed by the teachers and coordinators. The study identifies that the reasons for non-compliance is not relate entirely to poor training or lack of training, but yet to a veiled discrimination that negatives the aspects of the African-Brazilian and African culture and history.
