This paper makes a study on the legal granting of freedom in Brazil slavery of the nineteenth century. So much so, in light of the Semantics of the Event, postulated by Guimarães, we analyze the legal instruments granting of freedom, especially the letters of manumission, as linguistically materializes granting freedom to the enslaved beings. From the analysis, we find the chances of this relativization granted freedom, as this freedom had proved discrepant in relation to the freedom inherent in you. And yet, we find the balance character attributed to freedmen, since the same in many ways, proved to be linked to equity conditions inherent to the slaves.
